Late Autumn

Because my last post had so many snowy pictures, I really feel like I missed showing you how pretty the autumn has been! We have moved into winter so fast it has taken me by surprise.
Today was a beautiful crisp sunny day so I wandered down to our lake and took some pictures of the autumn colours before they all drop off into the lake!





In some places the edges of the lake are already beginning to freeze.







What a pretty spot to live beside, especially when the sun is out! But enough of this pretty photography - we are about to head away on a mission to Uppsala for the Swedish Multisport Champs!

Did you go for a nice swim in the lake this time?

We're going for dinner at your parents' place tonight! Unfortunately we haven't got any nasty foreign colds to return the compliment they gave me ;-)

Beautiful! We're loving the autumn colours here but we've got none of this 'lake freezing' nonsense here yet!!

Though it did drop to -9 the other day (while we were out of town swanning around on the balmy San Juan Islands in Puget Sound). Don't think we can escape the reality of winter though for much longer. Definitely looking forward to snowshoeing and X-country skiing again eh?!

I can't believe the lake is freezing over already! Brrrrr. No swimming for me.

Now we are safely back in NZ we've got lots of time to reflect on how much fun we had in Norway - thank you again for that! See you in NZ sometime...

Mmm, swimming in the lakes doesn't seem quite so appealing now for some reason...

Today I chucked a big ice chunk on the lake and watched it skitter across the semi frozen surface, brrr!

Still, with -9 your lakes will be freezing soon too Neil and Fran! Hehe.

After the Rogaine we spent another fun night at the local farm stay with the other Kiwis, then headed away in the morning with Julian, Jana and Sylvia in a large silver hire van. Cloudy Peak Mission

We've been back in New Zealand for 5 months now and I haven't managed a single post! The shame! The trouble is not lack of fun trips to write about, it's lack of time afterwards to do it! I have started studying again and seem to find zero spare seconds in my day. Nevertheless, I am determined to do some trip posts again. Since Christmas there have been several 'highlight' trips, one being a 5 day sea kayak adventure we did in Marlborough Sounds, another was a week's mountain bike orienteering carnival down in central Otago. Good Godzone Prep! The Takahe Traverse

An exploratory adventure in Fiordland with its remoteness, steepness and dense bush holds a definite allure for those of us who enjoy that sort of thing. Since back in 2004, when we bush bashed down the Neale Burn, swimming at times up to our necks in the meandering river to avoid the near impenetrable bush on either side, packrafting seemed like the answer to Fiordland travel to me. So, with this thought in mind (and knowing that in a few months we would be racing Godzone in this exact territory), a group of trampers (myself, Chris, Nick, Dan, Georgia, Patrick) jumped aboard a watertaxi and hooned across North West Fiord in late December with a mission in mind.
